Tasting Notes
“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon was tasted as a barrel sample… Deep garnet-purple in color, it storms out of the glass with powerful scents of black cherry compote, warm cassis, and redcurrant jelly, followed by hints of licorice, fertile loam, black fruits, and lilacs. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with energetic black fruit and earthy layers, supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering anise note.” — The Wine Independent, (97-99) Points
Ratings
"Outstanding and delicious even in its heady youth, the 2021 Hertelendy ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon really needs about an hour in the decanter to fully strut its stuff. Stored for 23 months in 90% New French and Hungarian Oak prior to bottling, the wine evolves with beautiful loamy and rocky soils on the palate, alongside good tension and a generous core of black fruit flavors. Espresso grounds and dark chocolate shavings add to the intrigue, as this generous bottling will live on for another twenty plus years to come. Drink 2024-2044." — Owen Bargreen, 96 Points
Awards
"The 2021 Hertelendy Napa Valley Cabernet is excellent in this vintage. It instantly begins with a wonderful aromatic profile of ripe blackberries, black cherries and creme de cassis that is joined with spices, pipe tobacco, graphite, loam, wild herbs and crushed gravel nuances which all soar from the glass. On the palate this deep, intense Cabernet possesses a full body that is well-structured and backed by a luscious core of beautifully ripe dark fruits, spices and dark chocolate notes that envelop the palate. Everything comes together and lingers on the long, multidimensional finish. While this is flat-out delicious today, it also has the makeup to age remarkably well for many years." — International Wine Report, 96 Points
Vineyard Notes
“A super effort that's relatively available...Scents of black cherries, cassis, cedar and menthol emerge from the glass, while the full-bodied palate is almost creamy in texture, dense and concentrated, ripe and supple, with a long, mouthwatering finish.”— Robert Parker Wine Advocate, 95 Points
Production Notes
"The 2021 Hertelendy Cabernet Sauvignon is deep ruby and opaque; this wine is highly aromatic with notes of dark plum, blackberry, and raspberry. There is also a layer of petrichor. This wine offers complexity without being too intense or too grippy in terms of the texture. Starting in 2021, Hertelendy began using a proprietary piece of winemaking equipment. This equipment is especially favorable in terms of taming mountain tannins and its use clearly reflects in terms of a softening of the palate resulting in a wine that is more approachable in its youth. This wine reveals flavors of dark plum, cherry and currant. The rounded tannins linger with a light dusty character and a slightly tart and mouth watering sensation on the finish."— The Napa Wine Project
